Left Brain versus Right Brain

First I wanted to apologize for taking so much time to update my blog again. The problem is that B409 have been pretty busy with a lot of exams to get ready and projects to be done. But here I am and today I would like to share with you an interesting handout that I found on my desk these days.
"The Left Brain Theory at Work". We all have heard about this theory but do you know which of the two hemispheres are you dominant? Specialists have said that Marketing students tend to be left brain dominant, with that being said, in order to be a great marketer professional the ideal is to use a combination of both brains.

Here are the characteristics found by researchers about each of the sides of our brain. Take a look:

The LEFT side functions.......                                              The RIGHT side functions...

uses logic                                                                             uses feeling
detail oriented                                                                     "big picture" oriented
facts rule                                                                               imagination rules
words and language                                                              Symbols and images
present and past                                                                    present and future
math and science                                                                  philosophy and religion
knowing                                                                                believing
acknowledges                                                                       appreciates
pattern perception                                                                 spatial perception
knows object by name                                                           knows object by function
reality based                                                                          fantasy based
forms strategies                                                                     present possibilities
practical                                                                                 impetuous
safe                                                                                        risk taking

Our personality is a result of the degree of the two sides interaction. We use specific sides depending on our daily functions, our education and life experience. The choice of which side domain the situation is what makes our personality and determines our character. The two brains see the world in different ways, and our concious mind can only focus on data from one brain at a time. So, which side are you dominant?

Once you know, it will be easier for you to identify your strengths and areas that you could improve to be to have a combination of both sides making decisions on your marketer carreer.

The right brain wants things to be concrete - they want to see, feel and touch real objects. To use your right brain, create opportunities for hands-on activities use something real whenever possible. Right brain people also need to back yo everything visually. If it's not written down or ilustrated, they probably won't remember something important, like directions, processes etc. (Tha'ts me!!)

The left brained person tends to be comfortable with linguistic and mathematical endeavors. They can memorize vocabulary words and math formulas. They enoy making master schedules and daily planning. You complete tasks and take pleasure in checking them off (I love doing that!!).
Left brain also don't use intuiton to process. When writting, they pay attention on spelling and puctuation whereas the right side cares about meaning and coherence which is also very important.

I would say that I used to be a lot more dominant on the right side than the left one but as I am getting old I feel that the left size is trying its best to win this batle most of the times in important decisions to be made. But still, I feel more comfortable working on a process if I have my notes with me.

Just one more exercise...

Put your hands together as if getting ready to pray. Look to see which thum in os top. If your right thumb is on top, then you rae probably right brained. :)

"Which of the thum bas the larger moon?" Generally this thumb is an indication of the non-dominant hemisphere. (Wider moon in the left thumb, equals right hemisphere dominant). In other words the "pointier" moon indicates the dominant hemisphere.

I hope you enjoyed.

HOW TO ADD GOOGLE ANALYTICS TO YOUR BLOGGER ACCOUNT

As I mentioned on my last post, I am going to help you out to start tracking visitors to your blog using the Google Analytics tool. So here are the steps:
1)      First of all, you need to sign up for a google analytics account (google.com/analytics)
2)      Once you get your account, a google analytics tracking code will be provided for your to paste it on the template of your blog.

·         How to find your access code?
Go to Admin on your google analytics account, select the tab “Tracking Code” , scroll down and you will see a box with the code provided

3)      Select the tracking code and copy it
4)      Go to your blog and click Setting on the Manage Options
5)      Edit your template: Click Template tab – Edit HTML (Obs. In case an alert message pop up just click proceed)
6)      A window will be opened with a huge HTML code – Don’t panic! Scroll to the bottom of the code until you see the tag </body>
7)      Paste your Google Analytics Tracking Code above the tag </body>
8)      Save the template

TIP: If you use adwords, link to your analytics account (It can help you to see how well your paid keywords perform in terms of conversion rates, revenue and ROI)
  • How do I know if it’s working?
After pasting our tracking code, usually takes 24h for data to appear in your report.  To check if  you were able to link your blog to your google analytics account,  you can go to access your google analytics account, click on tracking code, and check your website tracking status. If it’s working, you will see “receiving data” as your tracking status.
  • Explore your reports!
Once we get the reports of our blog visitors, we can visualize the information in many different ways depending on our analysis.  For example, we can use the calendar to set a period of time, if we want to compare our site performance by week/month/year.

QUESTIONS? If you have any questions or want to learn more about GA, I recommend you to watch the “first steps” videos on the google analytics page: http://www.google.com/analytics/iq.html
and also visit the blog: http://analytics.blogspot.ca/

Thank you!! I hope you enjoy it!

WHAT GOOGLE ANALYTICS CAN DO FOR YOU?

I am sure if you are in the Marketing field, you have probably heard about the web tool Google Analytics.  The Google Analytics allow us to find out how  visitors find and use our page which can help us to  improve it and track measures such as revenue, average order value and e-commerce conversion rates.  Moreover, the detailed statistics on visits on websites provided by GA it’s been potentially converted into useful information for marketing efforts such as how interact on our site, how effective is our content, and what should we change to make it more effectible. Isn’t  it amazing? Everything becomes that measurable! - For free, indeed!
  • Metrics x Dimensions
The numbers of pages, pages viewed per visit, and average time on site, are examples of metrics that Google Analytics allows us to measure, graph, and compare to see how they are correlated.  Dimensions describe attributes, in other words, the tables we see on the GA reports, usually break out data by a single dimension. Each row in the table shows the data for a different value of the dimension. For instance, a dimension can be shown by Country and each row will contains the data for a different country.  If you want you can add a secondary dimension, which will let us see data for each combination of two dimensions.
Understanding these concepts will make it easier for us to gather the right data to be converted into useful information.
  • Here are some more features of  the Google Analytics tool:
·         Map Overlay –  We can use to target campaigns by geographic regions
·         Adwords Integration- Track adwords campaigns
·         Internet site search-  Track how people use the search box on our site  (OMG!)
·         Funnel Visualization – Help to optizimize our check out and conversion click paths

I bet you can’t wait to start tracking visits on your page using this amazing tool, just wait for the next post and I will help you out!

Links - B409 for you!

Hello Everyone! I little bit of introduction to start today, my name is Mariana and I am taking Strategic Relationship Marketing (B409) at George Brown College. I have bachellor in Marketing and Advertising, and I always thought that I would work at an Ads agency since I'd had a experience working as Account manager junior in my first job. Then, I had the opportunity to work over a year at a marketing departament operating a loyalty program and creating marketing strategies to build relationship with its members which made me realize that was THE FIELD I wanted to work in. For this reason, I chose this program where I've been developing my analytics skils to create and analyze marketing reports and presentations, to work with big amount of data, using softwares as SAS, Access and Excel. We learn how to extract customer insights to provide the basis of effective marketing programs. During this program, all of my professors are successfull business/marketing experts who help us to think out of the box. They teach not only subjects, but their practical knowledge, giving recommendations to make us outstanding in the market. I've also the pleasure to meet my class colleagues from different parts of the globe who also contribute daily to my learning, sharing their work skills and experience abroad. Here are some links to their blogs, each of them about different types of marketing and from different perspectives and point of views. I hope you enjoy it!

Hello!

Hello! This is my new blog for business purposes, part of an assignment of a course Computer Applications for Database Marketing II. I used to have a blog to write about my first year of experience in Toronto, but I decided to close it since I started my Postgraduate course and my life became more about studies and to get into the Canadian business environment. I had no -longer interesting histories about tours or English-school-new-friends in Toronto to share with the people who was following me from back home (Brazil). All my weekends were now about books, job searching and group projects.  So, even though I found myself during this new experience and was amazed with the grown, the learning,  the new challenges and people that I’ve met, I had to close my previous blog because I knew that my new reality wouldn’t be  as much interesting for my readers as it’s been for me.  Anyways, I am glad I have a reason to become a blogger again and I hope to meet new followers also interested in marketing and business around the globe. I promise to do my best to make it as entertainer as a tour in Toronto City.
